Batman learns that his old friend, John Whitebird, is competing with unscrupulous businessman Tom Tallwater for the chieftanship of the Kijowa tribe of Native Americans. The position is to be assigned according to the results of a contest using the traditional skills of the tribe. Batman feels confident in his ability to train John on wrestling and horseback riding, but he calls in Green Arrow to coach him in archery. After several days worth of intense training and politically incorrect dialogue, the contest begins. Unfortunately, Tallwater has made a deal with the "Promoter," a cigar-chomping man named J. Jay Jaye to fix the contest, and ensure that Tallwater wins. Tallwater does, only to learn that Jaye's price is to gain the secret of the Thunderbird, which only the Kijowa chief knows how to summon. Tallwater grudgingly calls the bird forth, but Batman, Green Arrow and Whitebird manage to bring it down safely. Realizing his mistakes, Tallwater admits to cheating and hands the role of tribal chief over to Whitebird.
