Batman once again displays his incredible knack for political incorrectness in this tale, which opens with him arriving at the celebration of Chinese New Year in the Year of the Bat. (Incidentally, there is no Bat in the Chinese Zodiac.) The "mayor" of Chinatown, Sammy, is proud of his drive to eliminate the old ways, replacing them with the new ways. His son, Danny, is doing likewise, playing a pretty mean rock and roll guitar at the celebration. Soon the festivities come to a halt, as the ancient spirit Shahn-Zi tries to take control of Danny's body as a new vessel to continue to survive in this millenium. He surrounds Chinatown in a force field that cannot be crossed by anyone on either side. Fortunately, Jim Corrigan is in town, who is able to send the Spectre's noncorporeal form through the force field to assist Batman. The two find Shahn-Zi, and while the Spectre keeps him occupied, Batman uses fireworks to drain Shahn-Zi's power in a matter that is never fully explained.
